Barbarian RAIDer
Due to personal work and health issues I will be updating less frequently then before. I am still working on it though
Disclaimer:
This guide is a work in progress. As I finish each part of the game I will add new sections.
MODS if this is the wrong location for this experimental guide. Please move.
Credit:
Special Thanks to The Big Ouchy for Prebuffing Ideas with Nephelam Weapons (+Skills Staff as secondary weapon and Elixir of Power)
Goal:
A character that has no weaknesses. Instead of emphasizing one strength, and when that strength is nulled being in trouble, I wanted a character that works the same all the time in every scenario. Also I wanted a character that does not really/depend on any Sacred unique (aka hard to find, not reliable to find) items.
Concept:
Building a character around a cheap, easy to make, signature weapon. Made using the runeword Raid (hence the name).
SKILLS:
Stats:
Character Orb:
Equipment (Hatred)
Equipment (Terror)
Equipment (Destruction)
Character Advantages and Disadvantages:
Game Walk-through (Just Starting, will update with progress).
Disclaimer: I will not have any reminders about the "standard" quests. The game force feeds those enough already.
Hatred
Before heading to the next difficulty level.
Choice:
Stay in Hatred and level to 60 and finish up tiering you equipment
or
Go to Terror and up tier from Griswald
Terror
1) Get all 500 signets of Learning (gambling, set hunting, or running Griswald)
2) Start putting together our crafted equipment with the 2% DR blessed luck bonus's
3) Get the witchhunter's cap (most important)
Once I am finished with all my farming, I will add pictures of my character and equipment.
More to come

Also I wanted a character that does not really/depend on any Sacred unique (aka hard to find, not reliable to find) items.
Concept:
Building a character around a cheap, easy to make, signature weapon. Made using the runeword Raid (hence the name).
- Spoiler:
Let us take a look at a certain runeword- Spoiler:
Raid - Thul - Lvl 23
Javelins
+1 to Amazon Skill Levels
+(61 to 100)% Enhanced damage
Ignore Target's Defense
+5% to Cold Spell Damage
+(11 to 15)% Bonus to Summoned Minion Damage
+10 Mana after each Kill
Level 5 Blink (10 Charges)
Things to note:
The primary reason for using this runeword is Ignore Target's Defense.
This allows us to ignore the existence of dexterity and attack bonus modifiers.
Our attacks will (almost) always hit.
The second thing to remember is that thrown weapons have no durability, hence when used in melee, they are essentially indestructible.
A third thing, that I cannot believe I missed, is the charages a blink. Great for a character without unconditional teleporting.
Now to the weapon construction:- Spoiler:
Heads up: While adding attack bonus to this weapon seems quite weird with the Ignore Target's Defense, it has come to my attention that sometimes ITD does not work as well as it should.
Reroll superior weapon till get at least 100% AB
Attempt Luck Trail
If successful attempt Blessed Luck Bonus (from Griswald), keep it get additional AB
15 Life on Strike Orbs: Since we always hit, as long as we are in melee, there is no better way to gain life.
Why better then life steal for us:
We gain life against invulnerable enemies (Heoric Shields),
Does not depend on our opponents physical resistance,
Does not depend on our weapons raw damage (good since our base weapon damage will be tiny)
Does not depend on difficulty level
Why worse then life steal:
Only get life for enemies we are attacking directly
Which brings us to
15 Life on Kill Orbs
This means that any enemies that we kill while focusing on the "big bads" will net us life.
1) Any monster that generates other monsters tends to just keep us alive
2) When we need to use a distance attack (namely Fortress) we can still gain life
15 Crushing Blow orbs
We need some way to deal physical damage not dependent on wolves. This gives us 30% crushing blow.
This is nice with both shower of rocks and fortress.
Remaining Orbs (3)
Let us have the remain 3 be dedicated to Attack Bonus as well.
SKILLS:
- Spoiler:
Our Attack Skills:- Spoiler:
These are the attacks we will be using
Titan Strength: Innate Skill. Most importantly, when active, heals at the same rate as an apple. (no points needed)
Shower of Rocks: Extra skill points go here. This works very well with wolf companion and crushing blow. Also the slow effects and decreased attack are very nice. (Great spot for leftover points). Also this is our source of magic damage. Also works well with Nephlam Weapons.
Stormblast: 1 skill point. This is our back up when dealing with with the thorns aura or when we need to just pick off one creature.
Fortress: When we just do not want to get in melee or need to hit that enemy that keeps running away (only need 1)
General (Early Game) Attacking Strategy:- Spoiler:
When you first encounter a group of enemies titan strike then shower of rocks continually.
When fighting a boss (especially one who summons) titan strike about every 10-15 swings (or if you are running out of mana), just to ensure it stays up.
Also, since Shower of Rocks has a delay, it can be used as a trap. Run in, swing a few, and run away.
- Spoiler:
No longer use Titan Strike.
Keep and apple up at all times.
When walking into an area cast Fortress (which has long seek thanks to maxed Wolf Companion).
Let the enimies come to you.
If there are few enimes coming, take them down
If there are many enimes, back up into already cleared areas
-This makes them walk through the fortress
-This makes it less likely you will attract to many to handle
Support Skills:- Spoiler:
Wolf Companion - SMAX: This adds flat physical damage to our attacks. This helps negate our non-existant base weapon damage.
Notes:
This does a large amount of damage to non-boss enemies (proportionally to total hit points) and crushing blow does our massive physical to boss enemies.
When paired with Shower of Rocks, the small active time of the "curse" is not an issue.
Bear Stance - Enough so we have 50% DR: This is are almost always active stance (except when casting fortress and we change back immediately).
Notes:
The purpose of this stance is to help us ensure 50% damage reduction. Also we will not have to invest much into it in the long run (see equipment) which leaves us with skill points to use for other skills.
Guardian Spirits - 1 skill points - Sometimes you just want a bod that can be hit instead of you. Could also put a summon on a amulet or ring.
Spirit Guide - SMAX: This is our main source of defense.
Notes:
It gains defense faster then Bear Stance, also since we will always have the maximum number of wolves, it is always active.
Mountain King - 1: Shower of Rocks and Nephlam Weapons only care about BASE stats for damage, just 1 point gives nice vitality boost when paired with our base +Skills. A fine dump skill before maximum level increases.
Nephlam Weapons - SMAX: This is our source of lighting, fire, and cold damage.
Notes:
Combines very well with our "basic" attack of shower of rocks.
The addition of this ensures now that we will be able to deal physical, magic, lightning, fire, and cold damage at all times.
As there are no enemies (including quests) that just susceptible to poison, this enables us to always have an answer.
Immortal - SMAX - As this is our only form of evasion that is not defense
Thundergod - 1 - While additional lighting damage is nice, with just 1 point we get the stun effect. Also this causes a bias towards lightning damage, making it tempting to emphasize negative lightning resist instead of all elements equally.
Stats:
- Spoiler:
All raw points in Strength.
All possible stat bonus's from other sources (Amulets, Rings, Crafts, etc.): Vitality
First of all since we have Ignore Target Defense, Dexterity is useless.
Second, it will not take long for our natural magic recharge rate to be faster then our mana usage rate. Also we have no skills that receive bonus's from energy (that wouldn't receive equal bonus from strength). Hence we ignore the Energy Stat.
Since Shower of Rocks and Nephlam Weapons get the largest bonus from base strength and not augmented strength, we want as many base points in it as possible, otherwise said, all of them.
Since health point increases do not depend solely on base stats, any time we can get a stat bonus from items, we should preference vitality.
Character Orb:
- Spoiler:
Important
15 Onyx - Cold Resist - Makes Perfect Late game (for armor)
15 Bloodstone - Fire Resist - Makes Perfect Late game (for armor)
15 Turquoise - Poison Resist - Makes Perfect Late Game (for armor)
15 Amber - Lightning Resist - Makes Perfect Late Game (for armor)
15 Skull - Makes Perfect Late Game (For Runeword rerolling)
15 Ruby - Makes Perfect Late Game (For Elixers of Greater Greed)
15 Sapphire - Makes Perfect Late Game (For Elixers of Power)
This provides us with much needed resistance in hatred and terror as well the ability to get perfect gems of those forms for our armor and jewelcrafting. And Perfect Skulls for rune rerolling.
Equipment (Hatred)
- Spoiler:
Weapon- Spoiler:
Until a THRUL rune drops and we are below level 31 (at which point we change to our ultimate with 2 Life on Strike and 2 life on kill orbs):
Bul Kathos' Teaching (Kriegsmesser) - Provides nice damage and life on striking. Add a few (no more then 3) mana on striking to allow early use-age of shower of rocks.
Then our "ultimate" weapon as specified above.
Assuming Lvl 60 when leaving hatred, a good balance would be
18 Orbs Spots
5 - Life on Strike
5 - Life on Kill
8 - Crushing Blow
Unique Equipment- Spoiler:
Helm:
Thunderdome (Assault Helmet) - This gives us Lighting Resistance and lightning Damage. Flat damage sources are important till Nephlam Weapons are up and running.
Body:
Iceshell (Plate Mail) - This gives us Cold Resistance and Uninterruptible Attack %. Also occasionally a cold damage proc.
Shield:
Invictus (Gilded Shield) - This gives us a massive bonus to defense and DR % reduction. Also it has no dexterity requirements.
Belt:
Dragon Tail (Plated Belt) - This gives us Fire Resistance and Fire damage.
Boots:
Wake of Destruction (Greaves): For a source of poison resistance
Honorable Equipment- Spoiler:
Gloves:
Honorable Leather Gloves
15 Resist All - This will help us achieve maximum resistance in terror difficulty and early hatred difficulty.
possible other additions:
Magic Find
Gold Drop
Jewelry- Spoiler:
Amulet:
Level 0 Requirement Rare amulet with at least 10% Poison Reduction
Monster's Rest in Peace - To avoid random deaths from corpse skills.

Both Amulet and Rings use the following Orbs:
Poison Reduction Orbs - Important

Crafted Equipment- Spoiler:
My preference is to use the Zomghelp Recipe to ensure my required level is as low as possible. (no with required level greater then 45).
My preference is to use Quiet Shrines for the Vitality Bonus.
All equipment must have Blessed Lucky Bonus of 2% DR
For remaining space on equipment for magic orbs are, my preferences are:

Fire/Cold/Lightning negative Resistance (in equal proportions)

Orb Choice
Buff/Debuff Duration
Poison Length Reduction
Character Advantages and Disadvantages:
- Spoiler:
Advantages:
1) Achieves 90% through equipment and 95% after quest of maximum elemental resistances.
2) High defense paired with decreased attack rating
3) Deals Physical, Magical, Fire, Lightning, and Cold Damage and therefore does not need to worry about immunities.
4) Does not rely on specific sacred unique to function.
5) Does not rely on minions or resurrects to function.
6) Easy Equipment Requirements
7) Consistent life gain methods
Disadvantages:
1) Has no all in super attack
2) Does not use minions or resurrects so always the center of attention
3) Weapon is fixed for build
4) Kill Speed might be too slow as Shower of rocks is not immediate
5) Sure to find more
Game Walk-through (Just Starting, will update with progress).
Disclaimer: I will not have any reminders about the "standard" quests. The game force feeds those enough already.
Hatred
- Spoiler:
Initial Stat Allocation Each Level
4 Strength
1 Dexterity
After you move to signature weapon, change to 5 Strength
Level 0 Challenge- Spoiler:
Earthquake and Lion Stance should be sufficent.
If find a ring or amulet 1 Wyrd Orb makes this a piece of cake.
Goal: Want the crystal to have +10 all attributes and high gold find %
Griswald (Gift Box)- Spoiler:
Goal:
Bul Kathos' Teaching (Kriegsmesser) - Unlike the other items from the box, this is temporary.
Thunderdome (Assault Helmet) - This we'll be wearing for awhile
Invictus (Gilded Shield) - This we'll be wearing for awhile
Dragon Tail (Plated Belt) - This we'll be wearing for awhile
Countess - when the ground begins to look funny - run
Dragon Eggs - Be careful where you use shower of Rocks
Hemoplague - This thing is deadly for us. Working on a solution.
Que-Hegan - No worries with Shower of Rocks and sufficent Life on Kill
Mephisto Farming- Spoiler:
There should be no problems with making runs.
Goal:
All of our early game equipment.
All unique items at level 5.
Level no more then 50.
Level 1 Challenge - Max Level 50- Spoiler:
I prefer 49 as the bonus's really not needed to cruise through this area.
This is a walk in the park with your equipment.
Warnings:
Do not get over confident.
Do not get over confident.
Do not get over confident.
As that leads to stupid mistakes.
Corpse Eaters - One of the primary reasons I elect to have 'Slain monsters rest in peace'
Diablo - Besides the fire attack from above, he is a breeze.
Stone Hammer Demon - Don't miss their shower of rocks in your shower of rocks
Storm Shaman - Again 'Slain monster rest in peace' to the rescue
Razer Mane Titan - Our weapon does almost no physical damage, no worries about thorn aura.
Detonator - when you see them, use fortress and walk away
Trap Rat - Remember that Shower of Rocks is a delayed attack. Run in swing a couple and get out of there. The Shower will do the rest.
In general:
Run for Spikes
Stay still in lightning
Run from fire
In that order
Baal - Not an issue. The summoned creatures just give you life and die for free while hammering away on Baal
Ennead Challenge: Trust me, your ready- Spoiler:
Need to pick up your Worldstone Orb. Don't forget to jewel it (before level 80)
With the Bear Stance and your equipment, you will not have an issue.
Warnings:
Heard them away from eachother
Keep a wolf near you (your only real source of damage)
Before heading to the next difficulty level.
Choice:
Stay in Hatred and level to 60 and finish up tiering you equipment
or
Go to Terror and up tier from Griswald
Terror
- Spoiler:
General things to keep in mind about your equipment as you progress through terror.
1) After finishing your resists on the character orb, start putting those perfect gems into your armor.
2) After sacred items and shrines start dropping, start switching out your armor. Example. Iceshell to Quilted Armor (Sacred) with +2 to skills
3) You should have 30% crushing blow on your weapon by level 90 (for the level 2 challenge). I also find that 30% crushing blow with Fortress solves are Hemopague problem quite nicely.
Act I- Spoiler:
Griswald and the Speacial Box- Spoiler:
First of all, besides a very rare shower of rocks from Griswald, you should have no issue with him.
Second, if you have not finished uptiering your equipment, now is the best time to do so (as I am pretty sure you meet all the level requirements by now). Also keep this place in mind if you have a new amulet that you want to add 'slain monsters rest in peace'. I prefer Mephisto for my shard farming anyway.
As I want a Witchhunter's Hood with four sockets, and that is the only set item I am interested in, we can ignore getting set items from Grisy.
As I want to get Empyrean Bands and the only inevitable way is gambling, also as we will be doing plenty of set hunting looking for the Witchhunter's Hood, I do not see a use for the signets of learning until after the above are complete. I suppose if you feel you need more damage (remember all our hard points go to strength) at some point (perhaps before the Level 2 challenge and Level< 120 challenge).
The shrines are useful when we get a sacred armor drop and do not want to go to Fautz.
As we will not likely get an ON from the rune drops, we we unlikely need it.
Again the Blessed Oil of luck we will come back for when we need it.
So in summary, Grisy really has nothing for us at the moment besides freeing Cain.
Countess - Minigame- Spoiler:
First have the class charm and the correct rune in you cube and nothing else
As I have no minions, I cannot rely on them to get witches attention, so my strategy is a little different
I noticed the best way to get to the countess's room is to either move the witches (by dieing) or running to openings (emphasis straight lines)
I find it best to set up a town portal on the level above
Put my equipment into my inventory
Put myself directly outside (either the door or by blink from our runeword) the Countess's room
Then reequip and enter
This way if I die from the witches (or moving the witches), I can continue the area.
Aside: I noticed that i get the sparkles from killing any of the minions not just the countess, and they work
Witch Star - Minigame- Spoiler:
Again have the charm and correct rune alone and in the cube
When you find a witch, keep a good distance and clear out enemies around it.
You need to be standing still (in my experience) to trigger the star
Clawstorm Terror - Remember to pick up the monster token since you are here
Andariel - Remember to run her two additional times for the Dogma's
Act II- Spoiler:
Fairy Witch - Get the token since you are here. Just as much a pain as always. Be sure to have put those perfect gems in you armor for increased max resistances. Also, shower of rocks acts more like a trap then an attack, so run in, swing a few times, then run out before the fire catches up to you.
Duriel - Tank away. Just run him three times for the Dogma's
Level Challenge 2- Spoiler:
At the tail end of level 89 clear the path from the lost city save point to the den of vipers. Because you can never tell what will go wrong.
Finish leveling to level 90.
Make sure you have a perfect gem at the ready.
After summoning, use fortress to deal damage, keeping nephalem weapons up.
(Between the crushing blow and and our elemental attacks (armor + weapons) we will kill them).
Just focus on dodging and casting.
If one happens to be isolated, shower of rocks.
Use town portal if you run out of potions.
- Spoiler:
Hemoplague - As our Crushing Blow is now at 30% on our weapon and we Nephlem Weapons, Fortress works now.
Glowing Blob - Don't Forget to pick up the token
Mephisto - With the life gain from kill and crushing blow on our weapon, I tanked him no matter what he summoned. Might as well finish him 9 times since you are here to get all the dogma's you'll need.
- Spoiler:
Landmass - Remember to pick up the monster token. As with anything with shower of rocks, don't fail to notice theirs as you use yours.
Diablo - As long as you avoid the attack from above, which he does not do if you are in melee, easy. Don't forget to run him two additional times for the dogmas.
- Spoiler:
Razor Fur Titan - Tactics: Fortress, Stormblast, or hit and run with Shower of Rocks (While the first hit will hurt you, the shower will not)
Bane Hunter - Be sure to pick up the token. Now you upgrade your class charm.
Baal - Dies quickly. Remember to run him three times.
Baal - Minigame - Issue: When destroying the Shardspawn (with Shower of Rocks), you will far too quickly kill Baal too (due to the nature of shower of rocks). Switch to Stormblast to destroy the shardspawn and reduce damage done to Baal.
Black Road Challenge- Spoiler:
Trail of Fear- Spoiler:
-Summon guardian Spirits
-Have the Butcher kill them until the pentagram appears
-Kill the butcher on pentagram (Stormblast to kill him quickly or Shower of Rocks for increased defence)
Trail of Contrition- Spoiler:
Make sure you keep Nephlaem Weapons Activated.
Make sure you keep Fortress Activated at all times
Just continue walking around the outside, the fortress with eventually take down the minions.
If ever you stop being diablo, kill any nearby Barbarians with shower of rocks
- Spoiler:
The only "difficult" part of the Black Road Challenge.
As you can deal physical, Magical, Cold, Lightning, and Poison damage, there are no enimes that are hard to kill.
Just move slowly so not to provoke too large of enimes at once
Let the enimes come to you
Retreat often to reduce the amount of surrouding enimes
As we have blink on our weapon, getting to the hidden areas is not an issue.
Warning: Be careful blinking into the area with the Robot Boss you can technically reach by foot but easier to reach by blinking. It is very easy to get overwhelmed. Choose where you teleport in carefully.
- Spoiler:
The hardest part of this Trail is that the queens are too brittle. Becareful not to accidently kill them with Fortress or Shower of Rocks before you have them together.
Clear the path to the far queen first.
I suggest the longer way (with narrower paths) then the shorter way with wide open spaces as the wide open spaces give more space for phalax to be strong and they have more room to run away.

You don't need to make Level Challenge 1 at level 49, you can make it at level 50 and gain the charm bonuses right away

I know. I find that I do not want to take the risk of going over 50. Also, if it is not needed to beat the level, I prefer not to do it. Personal Preference. Updated to indicate as such. Thank you.

Re: Barbarian RAIDer
Sure thing. From my experience, "accidentally" overleveling to 51 requires you to "accidentally" kill 5000 monsters, so it never happened to me.

I often get into a grove of, I have time to clear just one more area before the cutoff. I have gotten very close the wire finding myself finishing Anya's quest, being very close to lvl 51, and still needing to do the quest and hoping the monster's in act 2 do no push me over.

I have bad news for you... AR is always superior to ITD... I discover that in Yshari Sanctum, and other places.... The weapon is really cheap., However there's other "better" options for barbarian (including trhowing axes).... If you choose the weapon for the double mo effect, imo, even a honorific item can be better... However, it's a good idea, specially the walktrhough of the game..

ITD>>>AR unless you're taking on a boss in which case ITD doesn't work. Having said that there's better sourced of ITD endgame (lottery bonus for example).

Sure having pictures will give it a visual look but to call it "boring" is not cool. I don't think adding a few pictures will make a difference in the guide. The info that's written IS the important part. Last person I've seen that needed pictures to read was my lil 4 year old nephew. Overall, props for making the guide. I'm sure ppl will find it useful. Keep up the great work!
